Jacob Lawrence: The Fredrick Douglass and Harriett Tubman Series of 1938-1940

January 27, 2012-September 8, 2012

Ellen Harkins Wheat, Art Historian, describes Jacob Lawrence’s Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman series from the late 1930s present as the dramatic biographies of two American abolitionists who lived around the time of the Civil War. Taken together, the paintings have an extraordinary conceptual unity and visual eloquence. Although completed very early in Lawrence’s career, these two series embody some of the artist’s strongest work. The sixty-three paintings were part of a gift to Hampton University in 1968 from the private foundation, The Harmon Foundation, an organization that supported African American art.

February 13, 2012

Yasmin Levy’s deep, spiritual singing, passionate vocal delivery and striking good looks continue to entrance fans new and old around the world. Her emotive and distinctive style brings a new interpretation to the medieval Ladino/Judeo Spanish song by incorporating more modern sounds from Andalusia and Persia. Of her unique style, the artist herself says: “I am proud to combine the two cultures of Landino and Flamenco, while mixing in some Middle Eastern influences. I am embarking on a 500 year old musical journey, exploring the musical memories of the old Moorish and Jewish-Spanish world and introducing some influences from the Arab world.” She comes to The American on her second tour of the U.S. This will also include concerts in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. She recently completed a five city tour in Turkey and, in total, she has played more than 80 shows in 19 different countries on her recent tour which coincided with the release of her latest CD, Sentir. Bettye LaVette

February 16, 2012

Often hailed as the Great Lady of Soul, Bettye LaVette is a song stylist par excellence. Her voice is one of richness and depth, naked, raw and visceral emotion and a voice filled with the wisdom and acumen acquired during the course of her more than four decade career. The winner of numerous awards and citations, Bettye returned to Carnegie Hall this year as a featured performer in the tribute event to Neil Young. She regularly appears on The Today Show, Late Night with David Letterman, the Tonight Show with Jay  Leno, Tavis Smiley and many others. She performed for President Obama’s inaugural at the Lincoln Memorial in January 2009. Legendary British rocker, Sir Elton John sums it up for us: “Bettye LaVette has always been a wonderful singer—I have been a huge fan for many years. To my delight and surprise, she recorded an amazing version of “Talking Old Soldiers” and made it her own.” The American Theatre. 7:30p.m. $27.50-$32.50. 757/722-2787, www.hamptonarts.net

Mad River Theatre Works in Freedom Bound

February 18, 2012

An original play with music, Freedom Bound tells the story of the most important incident in the history of the Underground Railroad in Ohio. This is the story of Addison White, a slave who escaped from Kentucky and ended up in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. There he was befriended by a farmer named Udney Hide. Addison worked for his meals by day and learned to read and write by night with the help of Hyde’s daughter, Amanda. It was not too long before Addison was discovered by his former master and Federal Marshall’s came to arrest him and return him to slavery. But, more than 100 citizens confronted the Marshalls and demanded they set Addison free.
